Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT)

Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) is an international agreement that simplifies the process of filing patent applications across multiple countries. It is administered by the World Intellectual Property Organization and enables applicants to file one international application instead of separate national filings.

The PCT system does not itself grant patents but streamlines the procedure by providing a unified filing, search, and preliminary examination process. It includes stages such as the international search, publication, and optional international preliminary examination before entering national or regional phases.

By using the PCT route, applicants gain additional time—typically up to 30 or 31 months—to decide in which countries to pursue patent protection, allowing for better strategic and financial planning.

The PCT plays a crucial role in the global patent system by reducing administrative complexity and facilitating international innovation and technology dissemination.
