Madrid Protocol

Madrid Protocol is an international treaty that facilitates the registration and management of trademarks across multiple countries through a single application. It is administered by the World Intellectual Property Organization and forms part of the Madrid System for the international registration of marks.

Under the Madrid Protocol, applicants can file one application through their home trademark office and designate multiple member countries where protection is sought. Each designated country examines the application according to its own laws, but the centralized system simplifies filing, renewal, and management processes.

The system offers significant advantages, including reduced administrative burden, cost efficiency, and streamlined portfolio management. It is particularly useful for businesses operating internationally and seeking consistent trademark protection across jurisdictions.

The Madrid Protocol plays a key role in global brand protection by making it easier for companies to expand and safeguard their trademarks in international markets.
