General Court (European Union)

General Court is one of the two constituent courts of the Court of Justice of the European Union. Based in Luxembourg, the General Court has jurisdiction over a wide range of actions brought by individuals, companies, and, in certain cases, Member States against institutions, bodies, offices, and agencies of the European Union.

In the field of intellectual property, the General Court is particularly known for reviewing appeals against decisions of the European Union Intellectual Property Office concerning European Union trademarks and registered Community designs. Its judgments address issues such as likelihood of confusion, distinctiveness, reputation, bad faith, genuine use, and design validity.

The General Court’s decisions contribute significantly to the interpretation and development of European Union intellectual property law. Its judgments may, on points of law, be appealed to the Court of Justice of the European Union under the conditions laid down in the EU Treaties.
