How to do patent search in Turkey
You can perform your patent searches in the database of Turkish Patent and Trademark Office free of charge on this link.
There are 3 options for searches: File Tracking Search, Detailed Search, Advanced Search.
By using the File Tracking tab on the search screen, you can reach the status info of a published patent application. You need to know the Turkish application, grant or registration number for this search. When you entered one of these and submit, you will have all the registry details of a patent or utility model, including latest status info.
Patent Search tab is most helpful. It covers following criteria:
- Invention title
- Applicant
- Application number
- PCT application number
- Priority number
- IPC class
- Publication date
- Abstract
- Inventor name
- European patent application number
- European patent publication number
- PCT publication number
- Agent for service
- CPC class
You can make your search using one of the above criteria or a combination of them simultaneously.
When you search in title and abstract, you need to do it in Turkish. It is not possible to search in English or other languages.
When searching with the applicant or inventor name, you better use a part of the name of applicant or inventor. It is advisable to use the initial part of the applicants' and inventors’ names or their different versions as their names can be inconsistent in the database.
If you want to make your search based on IPC, you need to be careful, and you should search by both combining and uncombining class numbers and characters to have all the relevant search results.
When you search with European patent application number and European patent publication number, you should add "EP" with the European patent application number and “B1” or “A1” with the European patent publication number.
Advanced Search tab provides search possibility based on the above criteria but with selectable boolean operators, i.e. “equal”, “not equal”, “including” and “not including”, with the possibility of combining different search fields with “AND” and “OR” operators.
When you enter your search criterion or criteria and submit it or them, the search results are listed. You can click the red-colored button “Details” and reach the details of the listed patents/patent applications in the Turkish patent database.
You can find the history of the patent file, including the status info, search, examination and publication details, renewal fee payments etc. The documents of the patents/patent applications, i.e. search reports, examination reports, specifications are publicly available next to each stage info. The information is provided in Turkish, but you can use a machine translation to understand the content.
